Madison’s Fire Retarded plays garage-punk with particularly thrashing, volatile rhythms and a sonic presence that’s surprisingly full in such a proudly raggedy genre. Singer/guitarist Tyler Fassnacht, whose vocals in previous band Giant People drew more on the lovable nasality of Superchunk and The Weakerthans, proves a formidable screamer and shrieker on the three songs of the band’s debut 7-inch, High Horse. Fassnacht and drummer Alex Ross recently welcomed two new bandmates, Bobby Hussy of The Hussy on second guitar and Claire Nelson-Lifson on bass. (Full disclosure: Bobby and I both work at MadCity Music Exchange; Claire is a professional hair-cutter who cuts my hair sometimes.) Personally I can get a little burned out on garage-punk at times, but Fire Retarded pour enough raw, unstable anger into it to make the sound refreshing.
